Congratulations to Stephen O’Flynn on making the League of Ireland Division 1 team of the year. Stephen has had a prolific time since returning to Limerick FC in the transfer window with 14 goals in 14 games. Like everyone in the Midwest we hope to see Stephen in as good goal scoring form for Limerick FC next season as the club push for promotion back to the Premier League.
Pat O’Sullivan Chairman Limerick FC said “This has been a great experience so far this year since I got involved with Limerick FC, I have been amazed at the work carried out by the management committee and want to thank them for there endeavour and will to see this club back where it belongs. I am a straight talker for my part and when I get involved in something I see it through. This club needs the support of all the relevant bodies in Limerick and the Midwest to achieve its goals of sustainability and return the club to it’s rightful place in the Premier Division and at the centre of the Community, this will give people something to be proud of in these troubled times. Limerick FC now supports 6 junior clubs in disadvantaged area’s of Limerick City by sponsorship, these clubs will now work with there local schools in developing soccer within their areas with the backing of Limerick FC. Limerick FC will bus young children from these areas into our new soon to be launched all weather training facility at Seancoille in Corbally for specialist coaching. Limerick FC needs the support of everyone in the Midwest to succeed and we hope that the words of support that have been spoken by many will be delivered on when the time comes to secure a base for Limerick FC both in a Stadium and Training Facilities that will make everyone proud once again of this great club.” The chairman assures everyone that a vibrant stable senior soccer club can be a catalyst for improving the communities in the disadvantaged areas of Limerick, by providing facilities that allow them participate in sport and also to help the growth of young local players through its cooperation with UL, where a scholarship scheme will be in place to allow our young players to be educated while also playing soccer.
At the recent Liverpool Legends fundraising dinner Mayor Kevin Kiely in acknowledging the work currently being done by Limerick FC promoting soccer in the Midwest called on Bord na gCon to assist the development of soccer and sport within the region by facilitating Limerick FC in returning to its historical home by granting the club a 900 year lease at a nominal rent of €1/Year.
Review of Longford Town V Limerick FC
Last Saturday night marked the end of the current campaign for Limerick FC when they travelled to Flancare Park to take on Longford Town.
The game itself made little difference in the overall league standings but both sides served up some exciting football with plenty of chances at both ends.
It was Limerick who scored the only goal of the first half although Longford just about shaded the half in terms of posession. It was just on the stroke of half-time when an inch perfect free kick from Shane Tracey found the head of Brian O'Callaghan and with the Longford keeper caught in no mans land, the Limerick centre half drilled his header into the back of the net.
The second half was only a couple of minutes old when Longford equalised. An akward cross was floated in to the Limerick box and an attempted cearance by Gavin Roche deflected back off Longfords Tom King and looped over Dave Ryan in the Limerick goal.
As both sides pushed for the win Limerick found themselves a man down when Wayne Colbert was sent off for a second yellow card. This however was the catalyst for Limerick to take the game by the scruff of the neck. Limerick went close on a number of occasions to retaking the lead with Stephen O'Flynn, Jason Hughes and John Tierney all with chances. With twenty minutes remaining Longford were reduced to ten men following a professional foul on John Tierney.
The last quarter of the game belonged to Limerick but the Super Blues just couldn't find a winning goal. Pat Scully and his squad now head into the winter break and will return to pre-season training in January . Over the next couple of months Pat Scully wil be finalising his squad for next season and is hopeful of bringing in some new faces to help Limerick secure promotion next term.
Limerick FC would like to thank all of their sponsors, supporters, players and volunteers for their time and efforts throughout the season and are looking forward to working with everyone again next year for what promises to be a memorable year. The club would also like to take this opportunity to wish everyone a very happy Christmas and prosperous New Year and look forward to your support when the league begins again next March .
