King Unveils Ireland Women's Squad for UEFA Qualifier Against Sweden

19 June 2008

Striker Katie Taylor returns from suspension for Ireland's penultimate group fixture.

Ireland are vying for a strong third placed finish in the group having accumulated twelve points so far in the series from their six matches.

Should they take a point from their last two matches, both of which are against group leaders Sweden, they will give themselves a tremendous chance to earn one of the play-off spots on offer into the 2009 finals, which are to be staged in Finland. Ireland and Sweden will meet again in the reverse fixture on October 1.

The Republic of Ireland are currently enjoying their highest ever World and European rankings. They are seeded 16th in Europe and 28th in the World.

Ireland Manager Noel King recognises the challenge that awaits his team when they meet the nation ranked third in the World but is focussing on the strengths of his side.

"This is a massive task but we're confident of our ability to perform well against the top nations. We have the experience of playing against the United States and Germany over the past couple of years and that will stand to us against the Swedes," he said.

"Our spirit is always first-class, we have some established players playing at a very high level in club football and some young Girls starting to make the breakthrough on the International stage."
