BUCKLEY PREDICTS SUCCESS

Athlone Town manager, Liam Buckley, believes his side have finally turned a corner following last weekend's 4-0 victory over Cobh Ramblers.

Town are currently bottom of the eircom first division, with just eight points from as many games. It is a far cry from last season's performance, which saw the club lead the division for most of the campaign, before suffering an agonising penalty defeat to UCD in the premier division play-offs in May.

To compound matters for the midlanders, they could only stand by as premier division clubs stripped them of their top players. Greg Costello, Gary McCormack, Geno Brazil, Eric Molloy, Adrian Carbury and Stewart Connolly all left for greener pastures, leaving Buckley with the task of rebuilding the side.

Town recorded their first victory of the season last weekend with a comprehensive 4-0 victory over Cobh, and Buckley believes that his side have finally settled.

"That was the win we needed," said Buckley. "The fact that the club did so well last year, without actually getting any rewards, is the main reason why the team has struggled so far," claimed Buckley.

"But the win against Cobh is the turning point. We have been playing well over the last couple of games, and could have picked up a few more points. Now we have the elusive win we can start moving up the table.

"No club in this league has the divine right to run away with this division, and I don't think anyone is good enough to do it. I know Drogheda have done very well, but they will have a bad patch."
