IRISH READY FOR EURO SURGE

Shelbourne manager, Dermot Keely, has tipped Irish clubs to emulate the success of Scandinavian clubs in Europe, but warns that it will take time.

The eircom league side are due to face Danish club, Brondby, in the UEFA Cup this week and, despite believing Irish clubs are as talented as their Northern counterparts, Keely says Irish clubs need to change their way thinking.

"Were still light years behind the Scandinavians," said the Shels boss. "The pre-season results around the place have shown that the clubs here can handle themselves better than, say, five years ago. But there's an even longer road ahead of us."

"They (Scandinavians) are ruthless in the execution of every thing they do, especially up front, they finish with the mentality of a polished professional. Irish clubs predominantly finish with the attitude of part-timers. It's going to take a few years before the professional etiquette becomes ingrained in us," he added.
