Jamaican-born Barnes will attend regular clinics in the Caribbean to cast his eye over the young talent in the area.
Those players who Barnes feels could have a future will be invited for trial stints on Wearside.

"I'll be choosing the best players to go to Sunderland," said Barnes.
"They recognise that, although Africa is saturated (with scouts) the Caribbean is the next place they are going to get the talent to hopefully grace the Premier League."
Sunderland already have a strong connection with the Caribbean as they have Trinidad & Tobago stars Dwight Yorke, Kenwyne Jones and Carlos Edwards in their squad.
