Van Gaal who has a six year contract with the Dutch F.A. is starting to feel a backlash from a soccer mad nation who cannot believe they will not be involved in the next World Cup.
A dejected Holland manager said: "This is a disaster for Dutch football. That is not only for us, but also for the whole nation. We will now have to start all over again, and this may be the end of a very successful generation of players."
"And players like Hofland and Van Bommel will now not get the experience of playing in a World Cup. That is very bad for the development of Dutch soccer."
"I believe we lost the qualification here in Ireland. If you see how many chances we had to score, and when playing with 10 men the Irish scored from one of their few chances, that is the difference."
Its almost twenty years since Holland have failed to qualifying for a major tournament making Van Gaal arguably the most unpopular man in Holland. He refused to comment on his future with the national team.
