The 23-year-old had to undergo a scan on Tuesday after being on the receiving end of a hard challenge from West Ham's Nigel Reo-Coker in Monday's 3-1 win at Upton Park.
"Essien I think is not going," Mourinho told Chelsea's website.
"To have treatment, it is better to stay with Chelsea. He would be going for nothing."
