Champions League Qualifiers to test the best of Britain

15 August 2007

Liverpool, Arsenal and Celtic will all face arduous away fixtures in the first leg of the final qualifying round of the Champions League tonight.

Liverpool first play away to Toulouse as the Reds find themselves in the qualifying round for the fourth year running.

Rafael Benitez is a Champions League winner with Liverpool but he can take nothing for granted as his side's patchy away form last season could repeat itself if they have one eye on the Sunday clash with Chelsea instead of concentrating on grinding down their French rivals.

Arsenal will take on Sparta Prague in an attempt to get their European adventure going after a lacklustre exit from the knockout stage last year. The Gunners should be able to take most sides at the Emirates Studium but will want to shake off a tricky side like Sparta early as they are well capable of taking top level scalps on their way to a group place.

SPL champions Celtic take on Spartak Moscow knowing that Rangers have already won the first leg of their qualifier against Partisan Belgrade at Ibrox. Celtic reached the last sixteen of the Champions League last season before bowing out to eventual winners AC Milan.

Gordon Strachan's side know full well that the Russian side are no pushovers nor are they any strangers to the top level of European competition. Home form has never been much of an issue for the Glasgow club but away fixtures in Europe tend to spell disaster so the Bhoys will have to buck the trend tonight.

All three British sides made it to beyond the group stages last year and will need to repeat that success if they want to be in the same light as Manchester United and Chelsea but more work needs to be done before they start booking their group places.
